Canoe Bay & Bivouac Bay

From Fortescue Bay, shorter walks to Canoe Bay and Bivouac Bay sit on the Tasman Coastal Trail. Bivouac Bay is walk-in camping only (no vehicle access, basic toilets/platforms, no bookings, fuel-stove only). The same trail continuing to Devils Kitchen is a hefty day — not this page’s default.

Do not pair: Do not stack Bivouac Bay and Cape Hauy as “two short walks.”

Turnaround: Canoe Bay is a clean turnaround. Bivouac is further. Devils Kitchen is a different day.

  • Starting the long coastal trail to Devils Kitchen after a late Fortescue arrival.
  • Coastal trail from Fortescue — verify times
  • Allow a half day for Canoe / Bivouac; do not confuse with the 8-hour Fortescue–Devils Kitchen link
  • Shorter Fortescue side trips; Tasman Coastal Trail continues much further
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: A quieter Fortescue walk when Cape Hauy steps are too much

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Parks Tasmania before you go.

Where you start

Fortescue Bay

Same C344 access and Parks Pass as Cape Hauy, different direction along the coast.

How to get there

  1. C344 to Fortescue Bay. Parks Pass. Unsealed 12 km.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Walk toward Canoe Bay / Bivouac Bay. Reverse unless you planned the long Tasman Coastal Trail with daylight and fitness to match.
  2. If camping at Bivouac: walk-in only, no bookings, fuel-stove only. Confirm official notes.

What to expect

From Fortescue Bay, Canoe Bay and Bivouac Bay sit on the Tasman Coastal Trail in the opposite direction from Cape Hauy’s main cape push. Bivouac is walk-in camping only — no vehicle, no bookings, fuel-stove only, basic toilets/platforms.

The same trail continuing all the way to Devils Kitchen is a hefty day (published around eight hours from Fortescue). That is not this page’s default.

Logistics

Same C344 and Parks Pass as Cape Hauy. Different direction. If you wanted the cape platform, do Cape Hauy instead of inventing “two short walks.”

Hazards and reverse

Coastal cliffs, weather, walk-in isolation if you camp. Canoe Bay is a clean turnaround. Bivouac is further. Devils Kitchen is a different day — and the 2026 Arch/Kitchen works may change that far end anyway.

Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Arch/Kitchen closed Plan B.

Extra tips

  • Do not confuse this with Cape Hauy.
  • The 8-hour Fortescue–Devils Kitchen link is a different decision.

Often paired with Cape Hauy— only if energy and weather allow.
