Eaglehawk Neck & northern geology
Guide updated · verify Parks Tasmania alerts and track notes for this precinct
The first-timer peninsula circuit: Tessellated Pavement, Blowhole, Tasmans Arch, Devils Kitchen and Waterfall Bay — if the 2026 Arch/Kitchen works allow. Parks Pass required. Unsealed Blowhole Road (C338), limited parking.
- Best for: Half-day geology from Hobart; Plan B when cape weather fails
- Time: 2–4 hours on the ground if Arch/Kitchen is open; still 2 hours if you use Pavement + Blowhole + Waterfall Bay Road
- About 75–90 minutes from Hobart via Sorell and the Arthur Highway to Eaglehawk Neck. C338 to Arch/Kitchen is unsealed with limited parking.

Why this is the Hobart half-day
If you have one afternoon from Hobart and mixed fitness, start here — not on Cape Hauy’s steps. The northern sites sit close together. Four lookouts within about a kilometre of driving when Arch/Kitchen is open.
In 2026 the Arch/Kitchen visitor site is in a works closure. That does not close the whole park. Tessellated Pavement, the Blowhole and Waterfall Bay (from Waterfall Bay Road) remain the honest circuit. Do not invent a gate-hop.
2026 Arch / Kitchen works
Parks Tasmania alert (last reviewed 18 August 2026): Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen visitor site closed 15 April to 29 September 2026 for infrastructure improvements. Waterfall Bay Track access from Devils Kitchen remains closed; the track stays accessible via Waterfall Bay Road.
Re-check parks.tas.gov.au/explore-our-parks/know-before-you-go/alerts before you leave. End dates move. The works page and the live alert can disagree by weeks — the alert wins.
Pass and parking
Buy a Parks Pass online at passes.parks.tas.gov.au. C338 (Blowhole Road) is unsealed with limited parking — coaches and peak weekends fill it. Have Tessellated Pavement as the overflow stop, not illegal parking on the verge.
There is no separate “lookout ticket.” A Historic Site ticket at Port Arthur does not cover this precinct.
Isthmus, Dogline and what not to invent
Eaglehawk Neck is the thin isthmus joining Forestier and Tasman peninsulas. Convict-era Dogline history is real — keep wording factual and point readers to official / interpretation sources. Do not write folklore as fact.
The isthmus is also a driving pinch: wildlife at dusk, tour coaches, and people turning around after a closed Arch car park. Budget patience.
When to stay north, and when to leave
Stay in this precinct if you arrived after mid-morning from Hobart, if anyone in the group is done after a rock platform, or if cape wind is a wall. Geology plus a café in Taranna / Eaglehawk Neck is still a Tasman day.
If you still have an early clock, an open C344 and Grade 3 legs, open the Fortescue area guide as a second decision — not as the default next step after Pavement photos. Pair this precinct with the half-day geology itinerary.

Itineraries that use this area
3–5 hours on the ground (+ ~90 min each way from Hobart)
Half-day: Eaglehawk Neck geology
Tessellated Pavement, Blowhole, and — when the 2026 works allow — Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen. Honest Plan B if Arch/Kitchen is closed. Parks Pass required. Not Cape Hauy.
Full calendar day from Hobart
Full day: peninsula circuit (one cape or geology — not both hard walks)
Pick one hard product: Cape Hauy from Fortescue, or Cape Raoul from Stormlea, or a geology-plus-Remarkable Cave circuit. Pair the chosen walk with at most one short lookout cluster. Port Arthur Historic Site is a separate ticket and usually a separate day.
2–4 hours on the ground (+ Hobart drive)
Family easy: platforms, pavement, reverse clock
Tessellated Pavement and the Blowhole as the whole product. Waterfall Bay Road only if energy remains. No Cape Hauy, no Cape Raoul, no Historic Site stack. Parks Pass required. Arch/Kitchen closed 2026 — do not argue with a gate.

FAQ — Eaglehawk Neck
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Tasmans Arch open?
The visitor site is published closed 15 April–29 September 2026 for works. Confirm on Parks Tasmania alerts. Waterfall Bay remains accessible from Waterfall Bay Road.
Do I need a Parks Pass for Tessellated Pavement?
Yes — a valid Tasmania Parks Pass is required for entry to Tasmanian national parks. Buy at passes.parks.tas.gov.au.
Can kids do this precinct?
Yes with cliff and tide discipline. It is still unfenced coast. It is not a substitute for a playground, and not Cape Hauy’s step flights.
Is this the same as Port Arthur Historic Site?
No. Historic Site is a separate paid attraction further south. A Parks Pass does not include it, and its ticket does not include the park.
