Three Capes is a booked commercial walking product run through Parks Tasmania, not a day-walk permit you invent at Fortescue. If you cannot get a hut date, Cape Hauy and Cape Raoul still exist as Parks Pass day walks. That is the Plan B — not trespass onto hut alignments.

Published 2026 figures (confirm live): adult $650; concession/child $515; winter promotion $485 for new bookings 1 July–31 August 2026. Cap 48 walkers per day. Grade 3, 48 km, 4 days / 3 nights. Annual maintenance closure 13–26 April 2026; Cape Hauy day walk was not affected that window — still verify.

The fee includes a parks pass for the walk duration plus one day either side, a boat from Port Arthur Historic Site, and a bus from Fortescue at the finish. Historic Site sightseeing is still a separate ticket if you want the convict precinct.

This page is an unofficial decision tree. Book only on parks.tas.gov.au. This site never affiliates Three Capes bookings, Parks Pass fees or Fortescue camping.

Track status, weather, unsealed-road conditions and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A Parks Pass is not a Port Arthur Historic Site ticket, a Fortescue camping booking, or a Three Capes hut place.

Timeline

  1. Months ahead

    Book or walk away

Peak dates sell. If the calendar is empty for your window, stop refreshing as a personality and pick Cape Hauy / Cape Raoul / geology instead. Do not plan to “join a group at the boat.”

  2. Before you pay

    Read official walk notes

Self-cater. Pack for exposed dolerite clifftops. Fitness is Grade 3 with pack — not a lookout stroll. Confirm inclusions (pass, boat, bus) on the official page, not a blog table.

  3. Day 0

Port Arthur check-in, not Fortescue start

The walk starts with a boat from Port Arthur Historic Site. Finish is Fortescue Bay with a bus. Do not leave a car at the wrong end unless the official notes say so for your departure.

  4. On track

    Hut nights are the product

Cape Pillar / The Blade is the usual postcard. Cape Hauy is the finish day — shared with day walkers. Stay on the booked alignment. Fuel-stove rules and hut etiquette are official, not optional culture.

  5. After

Extra day either side is not a free Historic Site tour

The included parks pass covers park entry around the walk dates as published. Port Arthur Historic Site remains a separate paid attraction. Fortescue camping is a third fee if you add a night.

Parking & access tips

  • Follow official Three Capes vehicle and transfer notes — they change.
  • Do not park overnight in Fortescue day-use as a hack for a booked walk.
  • Port Arthur check-in parking is a Historic Site precinct — follow their signs.
  • Day-walk Cape Hauy from Fortescue is a different parking problem on a different day.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Treating Three Capes as a day walk from Hobart
  • Walking hut-to-hut without a booking
  • Assuming the $650 (verify) includes Port Arthur Historic Site sightseeing
  • Cape Hauy day walk “instead of day 4” without checking you are not on the booked product

Extra tips

Fee split (never merge)

  • Three Capes booking ≠ daily Parks Pass
  • Fortescue camping is a separate campground fee
  • Port Arthur Historic Site is a separate ticket
  • This site never affiliates any of those

2026 notes to verify

  • Adult $650 / concession-child $515 / winter promo $485 new bookings 1 Jul–31 Aug 2026
  • Annual closure 13–26 Apr 2026; Cape Hauy day walk not affected that window
  • Max 48 walkers per day
  • Confirm live on parks.tas.gov.au

  • Groups who need the three-fee split written down before they pay
  • Anyone tempted to treat hut alignments as a public day walk
