Full day: peninsula circuit (one cape or geology — not both hard walks)

Full calendar day from HobartBest for: Drivers who want more than one precinct without stacking Cape Hauy and Cape Raoul

Pick one hard product: Cape Hauy from Fortescue, or Cape Raoul from Stormlea, or a geology-plus-Remarkable Cave circuit. Pair the chosen walk with at most one short lookout cluster. Port Arthur Historic Site is a separate ticket and usually a separate day.

The peninsula looks compact on a map. Trailheads are not. Cape Hauy is Fortescue via C344. Cape Raoul is Stormlea / Highcroft. Northern geology is Eaglehawk Neck / C338. Remarkable Cave is Safety Cove Road near Port Arthur. Stacking two Grade 3–4 capes is how groups finish in the dark.

This plan is a decision tree, not a greatest-hits death march. Morning: one named walk. Afternoon: only if energy and daylight remain — Tessellated Pavement or a closed-Arch Plan B, not a second cape.

2026: Arch/Kitchen closed 15 Apr–29 Sep. Three Capes Track annual closure 13–26 April 2026 does not close the Cape Hauy day walk that year — still verify alerts.

Desk research. Not walked. Confirm Parks Tasmania the morning you go.

Adult guilt is the hidden risk: “we drove all this way, we should do both capes.” Resist. One named walk plus a reverse clock is a successful peninsula day. A second Grade 4 finish in the dark is not.

Track status, weather, unsealed-road conditions and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A Parks Pass is not a Port Arthur Historic Site ticket, a Fortescue camping booking, or a Three Capes hut place.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Name the one walk

Say it out loud: Plan A = Cape Hauy, or Cape Raoul, or geology-only. Plan B = the other product if weather or C344/Stormlea access fails — not both. Parks Pass. Fuel Sorell. Check alerts including Arch/Kitchen works.

  2. Leave Hobart

Early enough for one 4–5 hour walk plus drive

~90 minutes via Sorell and A9. If you cannot leave early, you do not have a cape day — switch to half-day geology.

  3. Morning

    The named walk only

Hauy: Fortescue, 9.4 km, ~4 hrs, Grade 3. Raoul: Stormlea, 14 km, ~5 hrs, Grade 4. Geology: Pavement + Blowhole + Arch/Kitchen if open. Do not start a second cape because the first finished “quickly.”

  4. Lunch

Reset in Nubeena, Taranna or Port Arthur township

Food is thinner than Hobart. Do not assume a café at Fortescue. Historic Site lunch inside the paid precinct only if you already bought that ticket for another day.

  5. Afternoon (optional)

One short lookout — or nothing

If the cape is done by early afternoon: Tessellated Pavement or Remarkable Cave (Safety Cove Rd) — not Cape Raoul after Hauy. If Arch/Kitchen is closed, Waterfall Bay Road is the extra, not an invented gate.

  6. Reverse clock

    Hobart before dusk wildlife

A9 and C344 at dusk are the usual collision window. Leave earlier than you think. Sorell fuel/food if anyone is fading.

Packing

  • Full cape-walk kit even if you “might only do lookouts”
  • Waterproof shell
  • Warm mid-layer — cape wind is not Hobart CBD

  • Grip shoes
  • Trekking poles if knees complain on stone steps
  • Headlamp
  • First aid + blister care

Parking & access tips

  • Different trailheads: C344 Fortescue, Stormlea for Raoul, C338 northern sites, Safety Cove Rd for Remarkable Cave.
  • Limited parking at cape trailheads — arrive earlier than a Hobart café start allows.
  • Unsealed roads: 2WD in normal conditions; wet clay is a different product.
  • Do not block Three Capes coach movements at Fortescue.
  • Fuel in Sorell or Hobart — do not assume pumps at Fortescue or Stormlea.
  • Never leave bags visible. Night driving on the peninsula has high wildlife-collision risk.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Cape Hauy AND Cape Raoul on the same day
  • Full Historic Site + a Grade 3–4 cape from a late Hobart start
  • Three Capes Track without a booking
  • Inventing a loop between capes on untracked cliff
  • Leaving Hobart after 10am and still expecting a 5-hour Grade 4 plus daylight home

Extra tips

Pick one

  • Hauy if you want the Totem Pole platform and can handle steps
  • Raoul if you want a longer, rougher Grade 4 day from Stormlea
  • Geology if fitness, weather or a late start rules the capes out

Port Arthur Historic Site

  • Separate ticket — never a Parks Pass substitute
  • Never affiliated on this site
  • Do not treat a cruise from the Historic Site as Cape Hauy

What success looks like

  • One named walk finished with daylight
  • At most one short lookout after — or nothing
  • A9 before wildlife dusk, not a heroic second cape

  • Cape Hauy TrackThere-and-back from Fortescue Bay through woodland and heath, then many stone steps to a viewing platform above Cape Hauy’s columns and sea stacks. Shares the last-day alignment with the Three Capes Track. Parks Pass required. Not walked for this guide — planning from Parks Tasmania.
  • Cape Raoul TrackFrom Stormlea Road through forest then coastal heath to Cape Raoul’s columnar cliffs. Parks Tasmania: 14 km, about 5 hours, Grade 4 — long, rough and very steep in places, limited directional signage. Different trailhead from Cape Hauy. Not walked for this guide.
  • Tessellated PavementFamous jointed rock platform at Eaglehawk Neck — pan and loaf formations depending on erosion along joints. Tide and spray matter. Parks Pass still applies in the national park. Pair with Blowhole (and Arch/Kitchen when those platforms reopen).
