Half-day: Eaglehawk Neck geology
Guide updated · verify Parks Tasmania the morning you go
Tessellated Pavement, Blowhole, and — when the 2026 works allow — Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen. Honest Plan B if Arch/Kitchen is closed. Parks Pass required. Not Cape Hauy.

This is the “we left Hobart after breakfast / kids will melt down after 3pm / we do not want 4 hours of stone steps” plan. Success is one tight geology circuit plus a reverse clock home — not a secret add-on of Cape Hauy after lunch.
From Hobart budget about 90 minutes each way via Sorell (A3) then the Arthur Highway (A9). A half-day on the peninsula is a full calendar day once you count doors-to-doors and a dusk wildlife buffer.
Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen visitor site is closed 15 April to 29 September 2026 for works (alert reviewed 18 August 2026). Waterfall Bay Track from Devils Kitchen stays closed; use Waterfall Bay Road. Re-check Parks Tasmania alerts before you leave. End dates move.
This itinerary is planning guidance only — desk research, not walked for this URL. Always check Parks Tasmania alerts, a Parks Pass, and a peninsula-relevant forecast the morning you go.
Track status, weather, unsealed-road conditions and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A Parks Pass is not a Port Arthur Historic Site ticket, a Fortescue camping booking, or a Three Capes hut place.

Timeline
Night before
Pass, alerts, reverse clock
Buy or screenshot a Tasmania Parks Pass (passes.parks.tas.gov.au). Check alerts for the Arch/Kitchen works window. Agree out loud: primary = Tessellated Pavement + Blowhole; optional = Arch/Kitchen only if open; Plan B = Waterfall Bay via Waterfall Bay Road. Pack a wind shell (cliffs are colder than Hobart), water, snacks, and a hard “leave the Neck by” time so you are not inventing Cape Hauy at 3pm.
Leave Hobart
A3 then A9 with buffer
Leave early enough that you still have a real half-day after Sorell. Fuel in Sorell or Hobart — do not assume pumps at Eaglehawk Neck. Wildlife on the highway at dusk is a planning constraint, not a surprise.
0:00–0:20
Arrive Eaglehawk Neck
Parks Pass displayed. Toilets if available. Layers on. If C338 lots at Arch/Kitchen are signed closed, do not invent a gate-hop — execute Pavement + Blowhole + Waterfall Bay Road immediately.
0:20–1:20
Tessellated Pavement (main event)
Tide-dependent patterned rock platform. Stay off wet, algae-slick slabs. Supervise children at the water’s edge. A complete half-day can stop here plus the Blowhole and still succeed.
1:20–2:30
Blowhole, then Arch/Kitchen or Plan B
If Arch/Kitchen is open: short hops on unsealed C338, limited parking, stay behind barriers. If closed (likely Apr–Sep 2026): Waterfall Bay via Waterfall Bay Road — do not start the closed Devils Kitchen alignment.
2:30–3:30
Optional Port Arthur look-from-outside only
The Historic Site is a separate paid ticket. Do not “just pop in” if queues will burn the reverse clock. A viewpoint or drive-past is enough on this plan.
3:30+
Hard turn toward Hobart
Leave before dusk. Wildlife on A9 is the usual failure, not missing a lookout. A calm geology afternoon beats a heroic late cape walk and a wallaby on the windscreen.
Packing
- Water — lookouts still dehydrate in wind
- Windproof / rain shell — cliffs are cooler than Hobart
- Sun hat & SPF even on cool days
- Shoes with grip — wet dolerite and pavement slabs
- Snacks that survive a car bag
- Small first-aid + blister care
- Parks Pass screenshot / confirmation
- Offline map / Waterfall Bay Road Plan B
- Headlamp if you might finish near dusk

Parking & access tips
- C338 (Blowhole Road) is unsealed with limited parking at northern lookouts.
- If Arch/Kitchen lots are closed for 2026 works, do not park on vegetation or block access.
- Tessellated Pavement parking is separate — read on-site signs.
- Never leave bags visible. Night driving on the peninsula has high wildlife-collision risk.
- Have Plan B named: Waterfall Bay Road, not “maybe Cape Hauy”.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Cape Hauy (9.4 km, 4 hrs, Grade 3, Fortescue via 12 km unsealed C344)
- Cape Raoul (14 km, 5 hrs, Grade 4, Stormlea)
- A full Port Arthur Historic Site ticket on the same half-day
- Three Capes Track “just a taste” — that product is booked 4d/3n
- Leaving Hobart after a late brunch and still expecting empty lookouts plus a cape
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First-timers from Hobart with a real half-day (or late start)
- Families who need high-payoff geology without Grade 3 steps
- Anyone whose Cape Hauy weather window failed
- Visitors who will protect a reverse clock home before dusk
2026 Arch / Kitchen works
- Visitor site closed 15 Apr–29 Sep 2026 (alert reviewed 18 Aug 2026)
- Waterfall Bay from Devils Kitchen stays closed — use Waterfall Bay Road
- Parks Pass is still required for the sites that remain open
- Re-check parks.tas.gov.au alerts; end dates move
What success looks like
- One geology cluster done safely with margin
- No invented Cape Hauy after 2pm
- Everyone fit to drive A9 before wildlife dusk

- Tessellated PavementFamous jointed rock platform at Eaglehawk Neck — pan and loaf formations depending on erosion along joints. Tide and spray matter. Parks Pass still applies in the national park. Pair with Blowhole (and Arch/Kitchen when those platforms reopen).
- Waterfall Bay TrackCoastal track to Waterfall Bay. During the Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen works (15 April–29 September 2026 as published 18 Aug 2026), access from Devils Kitchen stays closed; the track remains accessible via Waterfall Bay Road. Verify the live alert before you go.
