Family easy: platforms, pavement, reverse clock

2–4 hours on the ground (+ Hobart drive)Best for: Kids, mixed mobility, or anyone who will not enjoy 4 hours of stone steps

Tessellated Pavement and the Blowhole as the whole product. Waterfall Bay Road only if energy remains. No Cape Hauy, no Cape Raoul, no Historic Site stack. Parks Pass required. Arch/Kitchen closed 2026 — do not argue with a gate.

Success is one safe rock-platform hour plus snacks and a reverse clock — not “we’ll just see if they like the cape.” Cape Hauy is Grade 3 with many stone steps and unfenced cliffs. This plan refuses that upgrade.

Tide decides Tessellated Pavement. If the platform is underwater, the Blowhole and (if open access) a short Waterfall Bay Road walk are the named Plan B — not a surprise Fortescue drive.

Adult guilt is the hidden risk: “we drove 90 minutes, we should do a real walk.” Resist. Easy was the contract. A calm car home before wildlife dusk is the win condition.

Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen visitor site is closed 15 April to 29 September 2026 for works (alert reviewed 18 August 2026). Waterfall Bay Track from Devils Kitchen stays closed; use Waterfall Bay Road. Re-check Parks Tasmania alerts. End dates move.

Desk research, not walked. Verify Parks Tasmania alerts, a Parks Pass, and a peninsula-relevant forecast the morning you go.

Track status, weather, unsealed-road conditions and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A Parks Pass is not a Port Arthur Historic Site ticket, a Fortescue camping booking, or a Three Capes hut place.

Timeline

  1. Night before

Family contract — say the no out loud

Agree: primary = Pavement + Blowhole. Optional = Waterfall Bay Road only if moods allow. Forbidden = Cape Hauy, Cape Raoul, full Historic Site. Pack snacks kids will actually eat, spare layers, sun hats, wipes, tide note, Parks Pass, screenshot of alerts. No stair promises to kids.

  2. Leave Hobart

Early enough that you are not racing dusk

About 90 minutes via Sorell and A9. Last toilet/shop in Sorell if kids need a reset. Fuel there. Do not invent a “quick cape” because the car is pointed south.

  3. 0:00–0:20

    Arrive Eaglehawk Neck

Parks Pass displayed. Toilets if available. Layers on. If C338 lots at Arch/Kitchen are signed closed, do not invent a gate-hop — execute Pavement + Blowhole immediately.

  4. 0:20–1:30

    Tessellated Pavement (main event)

Tide-dependent patterned rock platform. Hold hands near the water’s edge. Stay off wet, algae-slick slabs. If tide or swell is ugly, skip the platform — that is a stop, not a dare. Toilets and snacks are strategy.

  5. 1:30–2:30

    Blowhole, then honest mood check

Short hop on unsealed C338, limited parking. If Arch/Kitchen is closed (likely Apr–Sep 2026), do not circle the gate. Honest check: happy / done / needs quiet time. If done, snacks and the reverse clock still count as a full family peninsula day.

  6. Afternoon (optional)

    Waterfall Bay Road or nothing

Only if everyone still wants to walk. Use Waterfall Bay Road — not the closed Devils Kitchen alignment. If anyone is fried, village/Sorell treat and home. That is success, not failure.

  7. Leave-by

    Wildlife buffer on A9

Turn around while kids still have manners. A dusk Arthur Highway with tired children is the failure mode this plan exists to stop. Do not invent Cape Hauy because adults feel guilty about an easy day.

Packing

  • Snacks kids will actually eat (not only “lunch”)
  • Water for everyone including adults
  • Spare layer each — cliffs are cooler than Hobart
  • Rain shell
  • Sun hats + SPF (adults too)
  • Grip shoes, not festival flats
  • Wipes / small towel
  • Small first-aid + blister care
  • Parks Pass confirmation + alert screenshot

Parking & access tips

  • Arrive earlier than adult-only trips — kid days need margin.
  • Limited parking at northern sites. Overflow is another signed site, not the verge.
  • Do not park across closed Arch/Kitchen access.
  • Tessellated Pavement parking is separate — read on-site signs.
  • Never leave bags visible. Night driving on the peninsula has high wildlife-collision risk.
  • If parking fails: one Plan B lookout beats a meltdown in a circulating car park.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Cape Hauy “because they have energy now”
  • Cape Raoul (14 km, Grade 4, Stormlea)
  • Port Arthur Historic Site as a consolation that eats the reverse clock
  • Starting Waterfall Bay from Devils Kitchen during the 2026 closure
  • Leaving Hobart after a late brunch and still expecting empty lookouts plus a cape

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Families with young kids or mixed fitness
  • Grandparents and multi-generation groups
  • Anyone whose Cape Hauy weather window failed
  • Anyone measuring success in calm faces, not stair counts

Family decision gates

  • If kids are done after the pavement: snacks and home — no lobbying for a cape
  • If tide/swell is ugly: skip the platform, keep the Blowhole, protect the reverse clock
  • If Arch/Kitchen is gated: Waterfall Bay Road only if moods allow — not a gate argument
  • If adults want a hard walk: schedule Cape Hauy another day without kids
  • If heat or wind is extreme: short outdoor sessions beat “one more lookout”

What success looks like

  • Safe behaviour near unfenced edges all day
  • At least one geology memory (pavement pattern or blowhole)
  • Home before wildlife dusk with manners still intact
  • Honest notes: Cape Hauy can wait for a cooler, older-kid year

  • Tessellated PavementFamous jointed rock platform at Eaglehawk Neck — pan and loaf formations depending on erosion along joints. Tide and spray matter. Parks Pass still applies in the national park. Pair with Blowhole (and Arch/Kitchen when those platforms reopen).
  • Waterfall Bay TrackCoastal track to Waterfall Bay. During the Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen works (15 April–29 September 2026 as published 18 Aug 2026), access from Devils Kitchen stays closed; the track remains accessible via Waterfall Bay Road. Verify the live alert before you go.
