Full day: Cape Hauy from Fortescue Bay

Full day (9.4 km return, ~4 hrs walking + Hobart drive)Best for: Fit walkers who want the signature day walk, not a booked Three Capes hut trip

Leave Hobart early, unsealed C344 to Fortescue Bay, Parks Pass, then the Grade 3 Cape Hauy Track — 9.4 km return, about 4 hours, many stone steps, platform above the Totem Pole and Candlestick. Reverse before dusk. Not walked for this guide.

Cape Hauy is the peninsula’s honest full-day walk for people who did not book Three Capes. Parks Tasmania publishes 9.4 km return, about 4 hours, Grade 3. The last section shares alignment with Three Capes finishers. A day walk here is not “doing Three Capes.”

The trailhead is Fortescue Bay, not Port Arthur. After Eaglehawk Neck you take C344 — about 12 km unsealed, 2WD suitable in normal conditions. There is a card-only Parks Pass machine in the day-use car park; still buy online before you leave if you can.

The usual failure is leaving Hobart after 10am, stacking a full Historic Site ticket, then hitting the steps in the worst light and driving wildlife roads after dusk. This plan forbids that stack.

Desk research from Parks Tasmania notes — not a field-walk diary. Confirm signed distances and open/closed status the morning you go.

Track status, weather, unsealed-road conditions and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A Parks Pass is not a Port Arthur Historic Site ticket, a Fortescue camping booking, or a Three Capes hut place.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Pass, weather, C344 honesty

Parks Pass purchased. Check Cape Hauy page and park alerts. Screenshot the track notes. If C344 in wet conditions is outside your driving comfort, switch to the geology half-day. Pack water, layers, first aid, headlamp you hope not to use. Agree a turnaround: the junction before the final cape section is a legitimate shorter day.

  2. Leave Hobart

Early — not after 8am if you want margin

About 90 minutes via Sorell then A9. Fuel in Sorell. Do not add Port Arthur Historic Site on the way in. Wildlife buffer on the return is part of the walk, not optional.

  3. 0:00–0:30

    Fortescue Bay start

Day-use / boat-ramp precinct. Toilets, water, layers. Pass displayed. Do not leave valuables visible. Three Capes buses and day walkers share the last section — expect mixed traffic.

  4. 0:30–2:30

    Out to the platform

Woodland and heath, then many stone steps. Wind and rain make the steps slick and the view a grey wall. Stay on the formed track. Unfenced sheer cliffs — supervise children; the platform is the turnaround for most day walkers.

  5. 2:30–4:30

    Return the same way

Do not invent a loop onto Three Capes hut country. That product is booked and one-way. If anyone is done at the junction, reverse there. Success is a safe return to Fortescue, not a summit photo at any cost.

  6. 4:30+

Bay reset, then Hobart before dusk

Swim or sit on the beach only if energy and daylight remain. Leave C344 with a wildlife buffer. A late café in Sorell beats a heroic extra loop.

Parking & access tips

  • Park in signed Fortescue Bay day-use spaces — not campground loops unless you are camping.
  • C344 is 12 km unsealed 2WD in normal conditions; give way to buses and towing vehicles.
  • Card-only Parks Pass machine in the day-use car park is backup, not a plan to “sort it there.”
  • Do not leave bags visible.
  • If the day-use lot is chaotic, wait — do not invent roadside parking on C344.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Cape Raoul on the same calendar day (different trailhead, Grade 4, 14 km)
  • Full Port Arthur Historic Site ticket
  • Crescent Bay / Mount Brown “while we’re here”
  • Leaving Hobart after 10am and still expecting a calm 4-hour return plus daylight home
  • Three Capes hut country without a booking

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers who want the signature cape without a $650 hut booking
  • People who will leave Hobart early and protect dusk
  • Groups who can reverse at the junction without treating it as failure

Who should not

  • Anyone who cannot manage several hours of stone steps
  • Prams, mixed-mobility groups who wanted a sealed lookout
  • Drivers uncomfortable on 12 km of unsealed C344 in the wet
  • Anyone stacking Historic Site + both capes on a first Hobart day

What success looks like

  • Platform or honest junction turnaround
  • Same-way return to Fortescue
  • A9 before wildlife dusk
