Itineraries

These plans are built for real Hobart day trips and peninsula overnights — drive time, unsealed roads, the 2026 Arch/Kitchen works, weather and energy included — not fantasy “do every cape” checklists. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a full timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free day-trip checklist anytime.

Every itinerary defers to Parks Tasmania for track status and alerts. Hard walks only appear where the plan names them — and only when official status is open.

Which plan fits you?

  • Half-day geology — late start, kids, or Arch/Kitchen closed: Pavement + Blowhole + Waterfall Bay Road.
  • Cape Hauy day — early Hobart leave; Fortescue via C344; 9.4 km Grade 3; reverse before dusk.
  • Peninsula full day — one named cape or geology, not both hard walks.
  • Three Capes overview — book-or-walk-away decision, not a day walk.
  • Two-day Fortescue — camp or nearby bed; Hauy in the morning.
  • Family easy — pavement and Blowhole only; no cape upgrade.

If two plans both “sound good,” pick the shorter one. You can always upgrade on the ground; you cannot invent daylight on the highway home.

Sunrise over the Tessellated Pavement, Eaglehawk Neck, Tasman Peninsula

3–5 hours on the ground (+ ~90 min each way from Hobart)

Half-day: Eaglehawk Neck geology

First visit from Hobart with mixed fitness, kids, or a late start

Tessellated Pavement, Blowhole, and — when the 2026 works allow — Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen. Honest Plan B if Arch/Kitchen is closed. Parks Pass required. Not Cape Hauy.

Cape Hauy dolerite cliffs and sea stacks, Tasman Peninsula (cropped from source panorama)

Full day (9.4 km return, ~4 hrs walking + Hobart drive)

Full day: Cape Hauy from Fortescue Bay

Fit walkers who want the signature day walk, not a booked Three Capes hut trip

Leave Hobart early, unsealed C344 to Fortescue Bay, Parks Pass, then the Grade 3 Cape Hauy Track — 9.4 km return, about 4 hours, many stone steps, platform above the Totem Pole and Candlestick. Reverse before dusk. Not walked for this guide.

Cape Pillar sea cliffs seen from the Cape Hauy track, Tasman National Park

Full calendar day from Hobart

Full day: peninsula circuit (one cape or geology — not both hard walks)

Drivers who want more than one precinct without stacking Cape Hauy and Cape Raoul

Pick one hard product: Cape Hauy from Fortescue, or Cape Raoul from Stormlea, or a geology-plus-Remarkable Cave circuit. Pair the chosen walk with at most one short lookout cluster. Port Arthur Historic Site is a separate ticket and usually a separate day.

Sunrise at Fortescue Bay, Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania

2 days / 1 night at Fortescue (or a Port Arthur / Eaglehawk bed)

Two days: Fortescue Bay camp + Cape Hauy

Walkers who want Cape Hauy without a pre-dawn Hobart exit, or a geology day plus a cape morning

Night at Fortescue Bay campground (separate fee from Parks Pass) or a nearby commercial bed. Day 1: settle, optional Bivouac Bay or geology. Day 2: Cape Hauy with daylight margin. Book camp 1 Oct–30 Apr; first-come May–Sep.

Sunrise over the Tessellated Pavement, Eaglehawk Neck, Tasman Peninsula

2–4 hours on the ground (+ Hobart drive)

Family easy: platforms, pavement, reverse clock

Kids, mixed mobility, or anyone who will not enjoy 4 hours of stone steps

Tessellated Pavement and the Blowhole as the whole product. Waterfall Bay Road only if energy remains. No Cape Hauy, no Cape Raoul, no Historic Site stack. Parks Pass required. Arch/Kitchen closed 2026 — do not argue with a gate.
