Plan B — left Hobart too late for Cape Hauy

You left Hobart after 10am and Cape Hauy’s 4-hour return no longer fits a dusk wildlife buffer. Named failure, named Plan B: Eaglehawk Neck geology, not a compressed cape death-march.

Cape Hauy from a late Hobart departure is how people meet stone steps in fading light and wallabies on C344. The failure is the clock, not your fitness Instagram. This Plan B names it: you left too late. The walk waits.

From Hobart the drive is about 90 minutes each way. Published walking time is about 4 hours return. Add toilets, layers, unsealed C344, and a wildlife buffer. A 10:30am CBD leave does not hold that maths.

What to do instead today

Eaglehawk Neck geology: Tessellated Pavement, Blowhole, Arch/Kitchen if open, otherwise Waterfall Bay Road (see the Arch-closed Plan B if that is also in play).

Remarkable Cave via Safety Cove Road if you are already near Port Arthur — still a Parks Pass park site, still not a substitute Historic Site ticket.

How to get Cape Hauy later

Leave Hobart early on another morning, or stay at Fortescue / Port Arthur / Taranna and walk fresh. Use the cape-hauy-day itinerary. Do not “make up for it” by adding Cape Raoul tomorrow after a late Hauy.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

What if the group still “feels fine” at 2pm at Fortescue?

Feeling fine is not daylight. Turn around or do not start. The junction before the final cape is a shorter day only if you still reverse with margin — it is not permission to begin a 4-hour published walk at 2pm.

Is a cruise from Port Arthur the same as Cape Hauy?

No. A Cape Raoul wilderness cruise is a boat product from the Historic Site precinct. Different ticket, different cliffs, not the Totem Pole walking platform.
