Dolerite cliffs: Tessellated Pavement, Tasmans Arch and the capes

How the Tasman Peninsula’s geology sites actually sit on a day plan — Pavement, Blowhole, Arch/Kitchen (2026 closure), Waterfall Bay Road, and why the capes are a different product.

The northern Tasman Peninsula is the honest Hobart half-day: patterned pavement, a blowhole, and — when works allow — Arch and Kitchen lookouts within a short unsealed hop. It is also the Plan B when cape weather fails.

In 2026 the Arch/Kitchen visitor site is in a works closure. That does not close the park. Do not invent a gate-hop. This is unofficial desk research — verify Parks Tasmania alerts.

Tessellated Pavement

Patterned rock platform, tide dependent. Stay off algae-slick slabs. Supervise children at the water. A complete first visit can stop here plus the Blowhole.

Parks Tasmania alert (last reviewed 18 August 2026): Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen visitor site closed 15 April to 29 September 2026 for infrastructure improvements. Waterfall Bay Track access from Devils Kitchen remains closed; the track stays accessible via Waterfall Bay Road.

C338 is unsealed with limited parking when the site is open. Stay behind barriers. These are cliff edges, not playgrounds.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Do I still need a Parks Pass if Arch/Kitchen is closed?

Yes. Open sites such as Tessellated Pavement and the Blowhole still sit in the park. There is no separate “lookout ticket.”

Is this the same as Cape Pillar?

No. Cape Pillar is the Three Capes hut-walk country. Northern geology is Eaglehawk Neck / C338. Different roads, different days.
